Cassini's map
Cassini's map : Iles de Glénan

As Louis XV was impressed by the mapping work achieved in Flanders, he initiates the collection of information for the first geometrical map of the Kingdom of France. Cesar Francois Cassini de Thury aka Cassini III, son of Jacques, is put in charge of achieving this task to the scale " a line for one hundred toises", that is 1/86400. The map uses the geodesic network that Jean-Dominique Cassini and his son Jacques (father of Cassini de Thury) have just established (from 1683 to 1744).

The gathering of information will start in 1760 with Cesar François Cassini de Thury and will finish in 1789 with his son, Jacques Dominique Cassini. Publishing will be delayed by the French Revolution events and will only be completed in 1815.

Four generations of Cassini will have devoted themselves to the achievement of the map which deserves to carry today the name of this family.

Cassini's map will be used as a reference for the mapping of main european nations during the first half of the 19th century.
